  15. <p>     AWARDED. To Ricci Adan, widow of Richard Adan, a
  16. 22-year-old actor stabbed to death by jailhouse author Jack
  17. Henry Abbott in 1981: $5.6 million in damages and $2 million for
  18. the pain Adan suffered; in New York City. Novelist Norman
  19. Mailer, impressed with Abbott's book In the Belly of the Beast,
  20. campaigned for his release from prison in Utah, where he had
  21. been serving a sentence for murder. Two months later, Abbott
  22. assaulted Adan outside an East Village restaurant. In the suit
  23. Abbott acted as his own lawyer. He argued that he was so adept
  24. with a knife that his victim had died instantly, feeling no
  25. pain. Adan, he said, was "not worth a dime."
